How to find WORK EXPERIENCE: Mindset & Practical Steps (Video)

Finding work experience can be hard and even more so if the students in question are not fully engaging with their school careers programme.

What if they don’t even try to find something?

Or indeed if their school does not include work experience as part of their programme. What happens then?

Hi, I’m career coach Gina Visram and having had over 12 years of supporting teenagers with their work experience by leading programmes in schools, in this video I am excited to touch on some topics which should be useful for all stakeholders when it comes to work experience for teenagers.

1. The students themselves – all of these efforts are for them!

2. Parents willing their children towards a positive work experience… experience

3. Career leaders / heads of careers / careers advisors: This creative and determined group of often under resourced professionals are often creating opportunities and seeking resources to support their students. I hope this can be one for them.

How to find work experience (video)

In this video, I share:

  • Some information about why work experience is important, but just briefly as I suspect people who will benefit from this video are already converts
  • Thoughts around what sorts of organisations to approach
  • Recognition of some challenges
  • Evidence that some companies have opportunities to apply for work experience (always check details of eligibility)
  • A list of 5 types of work experience which may be easier to get than others (please note this does not mean they are less important, but my experience tells me they may be more open to the possibility of hosting work experience students)
  • A reflection on transferable / employability skills
  • A general pep talk

The aim of this video is to help you all – students, parents, fellow careers professionals to see that students finding their own work experience may be tough but it is possible and really worth it.
